Blankets
Saddle keeps a blanket wardrobe for each horse and tells you which blanket to put on tonight, based on the overnight forecast at your horse's barn. You'll find it in the Tonight's Blanket section on the horse profile (Horse tab), and blanket suggestions also appear on the barn's weather forecast.
How suggestions work
Each blanket you place on the temperature scale gets a range — the temperatures it covers. Every evening, Saddle looks at the overnight low in your barn's forecast and picks the blanket whose range that low falls into. If the night is warmer than all of your blanket ranges, the suggestion is No blanket.
Because the forecast comes from the barn's location, a horse needs to be assigned to a barn to get suggestions. A horse without a barn shows a Link to a barn invitation on the blanket section instead — tap it to pick a barn.
Set up blankets for a horse
- On the Horse tab, tap the Tonight's Blanket section (it reads Set up blankets until you've added some).
- The Blankets screen opens with your horse's wardrobe.
- Tap Add Blanket.
- On the New blanket form:
- The live preview at the top shows your horse wearing the blanket in the paddock — it repaints as you make choices.
- Cut — choose Sheet or Turnout with the toggle.
- Color — pick a swatch. The color identifies the blanket throughout the app.
- The name fills itself in from your choices (for example "Sage sheet"). Type over it if you want your own name — or leave it and it keeps following your color and cut picks.
- Optionally add a photo of the real blanket. The photo is extra identity — the drawn preview always shows the cut and color.
- Tap Create blanket.
New blankets go into the wardrobe but don't have a temperature range yet — place them on the thermometer to make them part of the nightly suggestion.
Place blankets on the thermometer
- On the Blankets screen, tap Adjust temperatures below the list (or Place blankets if nothing is placed yet). You can also tap a blanket's range chip — it reads Set range until the blanket is placed.
- The wardrobe rearranges into a temperature scale. Blankets that aren't placed yet sit on a shelf at the bottom labeled Drag up to place.
- Drag a blanket up onto the thermometer to place it, and drag a placed blanket's handle to set where its range ends. Each blanket covers from the top of the next-colder blanket's range up to its own handle.
- Tonight's forecast low is marked on the scale, and the blanket it lands on is tagged TONIGHT — so you can see the effect of your ranges immediately.
- Tap Done to return to the wardrobe.
A few rules to know:
- Up to three blankets can be placed on the thermometer at once. The wardrobe itself can hold more — unplaced blankets are simply not suggested.
- Ranges keep a minimum gap between handles, so each blanket owns a clearly distinct band.
- Temperatures above your warmest placed blanket mean No blanket.
- To take a blanket off the scale, remove it from the thermometer — it returns to the shelf and keeps its identity.
Every change saves immediately — closing the screen is just closing it.
Read tonight's suggestion
The Tonight's Blanket section on the horse profile shows the verdict:
- The suggested blanket's name and color chip, next to the overnight low it's based on.
- No blanket with a check mark when the night is warm enough.
- Set up blankets if the horse has no wardrobe yet.
Suggestions also appear on the barn weather forecast screen, where you can see each of your horses' picks alongside the conditions. See Weather.
Edit or delete a blanket
- On the Blankets screen, tap a blanket in the wardrobe.
- The Edit blanket form opens — the same surface as creating one. Change the cut, color, name, or photo; every change saves as you make it.
- To delete the blanket, tap the … button in the top corner and confirm.
If a blanket still wears its automatic name, renaming the color or cut renames it too. Once you type your own name it's yours — a small hint below the field lets you go back to the automatic name any time.
Tips
- Temperatures display in your preferred unit; you can change it in your settings (see Account and profile).
- Pull down on the horse profile to refresh tonight's suggestion.
- Blanket edits work offline — they save on your phone and upload automatically when you're back online. Fetching a fresh suggestion needs a connection, since it's based on the live forecast.
