Documents

Keep your horse's paperwork and your barn's shared files in one place — vaccination records, Coggins tests, registration papers, boarding agreements, feed charts, and anything else worth filing. You'll find documents in two places: the Documents tile on a horse's profile (Horse tab) and the Documents tile on your barn's profile (Barn tab). Tapping either tile opens the full Documents screen.

Find your documents

The Documents screen has two tabs, one named for your horse and one for your barn:

A caption under the tabs reminds you who can see the current collection, for example "Private — only you can see Winston's documents" or "Shared folder — everyone at Red Rail Farm can see these".

If you have more than one horse or belong to more than one barn, tap the arrow on the active tab to switch. Switching here also sets your active horse or barn across the whole app.

Upload a document

  1. Open Documents from a horse or barn profile.
  2. Make sure you're on the tab you want — the horse tab files it privately, the barn tab shares it with the whole barn.
  3. Tap Upload document.
  4. Choose a source:
    • Camera — photograph a paper document on the spot.
    • Library — pick a photo from your photo library.
    • Files — pick a file from your phone (PDF, Word, or Excel).
    • Or tap a photo directly in the recent-photos grid at the bottom of the sheet.

The sheet tells you exactly where the upload is going before you pick — "Adding to Winston's file — private to you" or "Adding to Red Rail Farm — visible to all barn members".

You can upload PDF, Word, or Excel files and photos, up to 25 MB each.

The document appears in the grid right away under its filename, with a small badge while it's still uploading. Camera captures get an automatic dated name like "Photo – Jul 28, 2026". If you want a different name, just rename it — see below.

Uploading offline

Uploads work without a connection. The document is saved on your phone immediately and uploads on its own when you're back online. If an upload fails, a banner appears above the grid with the option to retry.

View a document

Tap any document in the grid to open it. Photos open full screen and PDFs open as scrollable pages.

The first time you view a document, the app downloads the file and keeps it on your phone — so anything you've opened once stays available offline, with no extra steps. A small check badge on a document's card means its file is already on your device.

There's no separate "save for offline" or favorite action: viewing a document is what keeps it.

Rename a document

Renaming works even while a document is still waiting to upload — the new name goes up with it.

Save or share a document

Open the document and tap the menu:

Free up space

If you no longer need a document's file on your phone, open it, tap the menu, and choose Remove from Device. This only removes the local copy — the document stays in Saddle, and viewing it again simply downloads it back.

Delete a document

You'll be asked to confirm. Deleting a document removes it for good and can't be undone.

If you delete a document that hasn't finished uploading yet, its upload is cancelled and it never leaves your phone.

Horse documents are completely private — they're tied to your horse, and no one else can see them, even barn mates who see your horse every day.

Barn documents live in a shared folder: anything you upload there is visible to everyone at the barn. Barn owners manage the shared folder and can delete any barn document, including ones uploaded by other members. If you need one of your own barn uploads removed, ask your barn owner.
