Rides

The Ride tab is your GPS ride recorder. It tracks your route on a live map while you ride, times your ride, measures distance and speed, and keeps every finished ride in a personal ride log. Rides are private to you — saving one never shares it with anyone.

Start a ride

Open the Ride tab. The map centers on your location.
If you want your safety group to know you're out, flip on Share with safety group in the card at the bottom (see Safety).
Tap Start Ride.

Recording begins right away. A GPS strength chip on the map shows how good your signal is — more bars means a more accurate route.

If one of your barn's events has a live ride session going, the button reads Join & Ride instead, and starting also joins the group session. See Events.

While you're riding

The bottom of the screen becomes a ride control bar showing:

Time — your ride clock, with a pulsing recording dot
Distance and speed — live, in your preferred units

Three buttons sit below the stats:

Lock (padlock, left) — locks the screen for pocket riding (see below)
Pause / resume (large, center) — pauses the clock and the GPS track; tap again to resume
Stop (square, right) — finishes and saves the ride

Everything is recorded on your phone, so a spotty connection doesn't matter. Your ride uploads to your account automatically when you're back online — see Offline and sync.

Lock the screen while you ride

Tap the padlock button to turn on pocket lock. The screen dims almost completely and ignores touches, so your phone can ride in a pocket without pausing, stopping, or pocket-dialing anything.

A "Recording" indicator confirms your ride is still going.
Raise the phone to look at it and the screen brightens on its own — bright enough to read even in direct sunlight.
You can also tap anywhere to brighten the screen for a few seconds.
To get back to the ride screen, drag the slide to unlock handle across the track.

Finish a ride

Tap the square Stop button. Your ride saves immediately and a completion screen celebrates it with:

Time, distance, and average speed
Your route, drawing itself on screen
Highlights like top speed and turn count, when there's enough data

From here you can:

View Ride — open the full ride detail
Done — close and keep the ride
Discard — permanently delete the ride (you'll be asked to confirm)

If you were riding in an event, the completion screen also offers a Post ride to the event checkbox. It's off by default — your ride only joins the event's shared results if you tick it. See Events.

If the app closes mid-ride

Your ride survives. If your phone dies or the app is forced closed while recording, the next time you open the app you'll see a recovery screen with three choices: resume the ride, finish and save it as it stands, or discard it.

Find your ride history

Profile tab → My Rides opens your ride log.
On the Ride tab, the trail-book button next to Start Ride opens the same list.

Rides are grouped by day, with each day showing its ride count and total distance. The toggle at the top of the list flips between Mine (your personal rides) and your barn — the barn side shows the barn's shared trail collection, not anyone's rides. See Trails.

Tap any ride to open its detail view.

The ride detail view

Each ride's detail shows the date, a map of your route with your headline stats (duration, distance, average speed) docked beneath it, and any notes. When there's enough data, a rail under the map switches between views:

Overview — the plain route trace
Speed — the route colored by speed, with a speed-over-time chart
Gaits — the route colored by gait, with a time-in-gait breakdown
Turns — turn markers with a left/right direction balance

The Speed, Gaits, and Turns views are only visible to you, even if you later share the route as a trail.

Below the map, an actions menu collects everything you can do with the ride: follow its route again, correct the ride type, edit or trim the route (Pro), share the route with your barn as a trail, and delete the ride.

Follow your own route

Every outdoor ride can be re-ridden: tap Follow route at the top of the actions menu and you land on the Ride tab with the route armed — it draws on your map as a reference line once you start, with off-path alerts and a finish congratulation. If you've edited the route (see below), you follow the edited version. Arena rides don't offer this (there's no path to follow in a schooling session).

Edit the route (Pro)

With the Pro plan, Edit route opens a full-screen map editor on the ride's own route. Move, add, or delete points, snap to nearby paths, or trim — the same editor trails use (the controls are described in Trails).

Your edits become the ride's followable route: it's what the Overview map shows, what Follow route retraces, and what Share with Barn publishes. The recording underneath is untouched — your stats and the Speed/Gaits/Turns views still reflect what you actually rode. Route edits save on your phone and sync when you're back in signal, so they work offline.

Walk, trot, and canter breakdown

Saddle estimates your horse's gaits from your phone's motion sensors and GPS while you ride — no extra hardware needed. Open a ride's detail and pick Gaits to see time and percentage at walk, trot, canter, and gallop, plus halted time, with the route colored to match.

Gait detection is marked Beta in the app: it's estimated from GPS and motion data and may not match your horse's actual gaits. It works best when the phone is on your body (a pocket works well) rather than in a saddle bag.

Trim a ride (Pro)

Cut off the parking-lot wander at the start or the forgot-to-stop tail at the end. Trim lives inside the route editor:

Open the ride's detail and tap Edit route in the actions menu, then switch to Trim. (Arena rides — which have no route to edit — show the row as Trim route and open straight into it.)
Drag the two handles to keep the span between them. The map, time labels, and the "keeping / removing" numbers update live as you drag. The slider track is colored by pace, so stationary drift shows up as cold end-caps.
Tap Trim route and confirm.

Trimming permanently removes the GPS data outside your selection — it can't be undone. A trimmed ride must keep at least 30 seconds of riding. You can trim any of your rides from any phone you're signed in on, not just the one that recorded it. Trimming recalculates your stats from the kept recording; if you've edited the route, the edited version isn't touched.

Who can see my rides?

Only you. Rides are personal records — barn members never see your rides, your routes, or your stats, and there is no way for them to browse your ride log.

When you do want to share, you share deliberately:

Share the route with your barn — from the ride detail, Share with Barn copies the ride's route into a named trail for the barn. Members see the trail, never the ride it came from. See Trails.
Post an event ride to the event — if you rode in an event, you can share that ride with the event's participants, either from the completion screen or later via Post to event in the ride detail. You can take it back any time with Remove from event. See Events.

Delete a ride

Open the ride's detail and tap Delete ride at the bottom of the actions menu, then confirm. Deleting is permanent and removes the ride everywhere.

If Share with safety group is on when you start a ride, the people in your safety group can see your recent location while you're out. The toggle appears on the pre-ride card at the bottom of the Ride tab; how sharing works, who can see you, and how to build your group are covered in Safety.

Tips

Keep your phone in a pocket with pocket lock on — it saves battery, avoids accidental taps, and keeps the motion sensors close to you for better gait detection.
Watch the GPS chip before setting off; a weak signal at the start is the most common cause of a scribbly route.
Pausing stops both the clock and the track, so waiting at a gate won't drag down your average speed.
Short on time to tidy up? Finish the ride anyway — you can always trim the ends later.
